Two letters from Father Joseph the Hesychast

This article presents two spiritual letters by Elder Joseph the Hesychast, a major figure of Athonite hesychast monasticism in the twentieth century, translated by one of his spiritual descendants. This is a publication of primary sources accompanied by a brief contextual presentation highlighting the author's profound, though discreet, connection with the monastic tradition of Mount Athos. The central idea running through these two letters is the primacy of divine love as the foundation of spiritual life and the path toward dispassion and contemplation. Elder Joseph articulates a theology of universal divine presence and of love as a transforming energy, in dialogue with the patristic and biblical tradition.
