You will be my witnesses

This article brings together two texts by Metropolitan Emilianos Timiadis, a prominent figure in Orthodox missionary and ecumenical thought of the twentieth century. The first, a homily delivered in Fribourg in 1986, constitutes a theological reflection on the nature and conditions of Christian witness in the contemporary world. Drawing on John Chrysostom, Tertullian, Basil of Caesarea, and Isaac the Syrian, the author articulates mission, authentic spirituality, and holiness of life. The central idea is that every baptized person is called to an active apostolate, grounded not in superficial proselytism, but in an orthopraxis transformed by metanoia. The article makes a contribution to Orthodox theology of mission by emphasizing the communal and eschatological dimension of witness, while critiquing contemporary forms of spirituality disconnected from a personal relationship with God.
