Bioethics round table

This article reports on a round table devoted to contemporary issues in bioethics, as it was held within an Orthodox theological framework. It is presented in the form of two complementary accounts. Julia Vidovic, a lecturer at the Saint-Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris, offers a synthesis of the États généraux de la bioéthique in France and sets out the position defended by the Orthodox Church in this public debate. André Krajévitch, an Orthodox physician and former vice-president of ACAT, addresses the fundamental question of the definition of the human being. His central theological contribution lies in the assertion that the answer to this anthropological question cannot be separated from the vocation of each person to deification. The article thus illustrates the specific contribution of the Orthodox tradition to contemporary bioethical debates.
