The Orthodox military chaplaincy in the Greek armed forces

The Orthodox military chaplaincy within the Greek armed forces is the subject of this article, presented in the form of an interview with the head of Greek military chaplains. The pastoral approach developed in this institutional context, in peacetime and within an army of Orthodox culture, is analyzed through the words of this official. The central idea that emerges from this interview is the existence of a significant gap between an idealized vision of military service, as reflected in Greek pastoral practice, and the reality of contemporary armed conflict, illustrated by the war in Ukraine. On a theological level, the article questions the capacity of Orthodox chaplaincy to articulate a coherent reflection on modern warfare, highlighting the tensions between spiritual tradition, institutional commitment and ethical demands in the face of armed violence.
