Despair
Issue 49 · 1964

This article by Charité Saint-Servais offers a theological meditation on despair, taking as its starting point the cry of Christ on the cross — "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" — and the divergences between the Gospel accounts of the Passion. The author examines the nature of despair through literary examples, notably Racine and Baudelaire, in order to identify its essential features: absence of revolt, resignation, sordid peace. The central theological contribution lies in the articulation between despair and intercession: bearing another's cross, in the image of Simon of Cyrene, constitutes a real form of participation in Redemption. The article thus defends a theology of spiritual solidarity in which Charity, understood as mad and boundless love, responds to all human despair, including that experienced vicariously on behalf of another.

On the prayer of Jesus
Issue 44 · 1963

This article offers a practical reflection on the Jesus Prayer, considered not from its usual mystical angle, but in its everyday and accessible dimension. The author adopts a meditative and testimonial approach, seeking to show how this prayer can be concretely integrated into ordinary life situations: waiting, conflicts, inner distraction, loneliness. The central idea is that the repetition of the name of Jesus is not a suggestive technique comparable to autosuggestion, but an act of openness to a real and active divine presence. The theological contribution of the article lies in the distinction between prayer and autosuggestion, and in the highlighting of the anthropological flexibility of the Jesus Prayer, capable of adapting to each spiritual temperament, while requiring progressive learning and disciplined practice.

On the prayer of identification
Issue 40 · 1962

This article on Orthodox spirituality, signed Charité Saint-Servais and dated October 1959, addresses the prayer of identification as a response to radical powerlessness in the face of the suffering of a loved one. In the form of a meditation, the text describes an inner journey in several stages: from the initial cry addressed to God in total destitution, to an active prayer in which the believer identifies with the other by placing them before God in their own stead. The central theological contribution consists in distinguishing this identification from substitution: it is not a matter of taking the place of Christ, but of entering into a trusting communion with Him, the one true Substitute. The article also emphasizes the collaborative dimension of prayer, through which God acts in the world through His consenting creatures.

A testimony on the liturgical experience
Issue 37 · 1962

This article offers the personal testimony of Charité Saint-Servais on the experience of the Orthodox Eucharistic liturgy. In the form of a spiritual and descriptive meditation, the author traces the different stages of the Divine Liturgy, conveying their inner significance for the faithful. The central idea is that the liturgy constitutes a progressive path toward God, whose patient and structured repetition educates the soul in self-giving and prayer. The article highlights both the pedagogical and mystical dimensions of the Orthodox liturgy: far from being a mere commemorative rite, it is presented as a present reality in which salvation is accomplished in the here and now. The value of this testimony lies in its articulation between lived experience and liturgical theology, illustrating how the structure of the liturgy concretely shapes the spiritual life of the believer.
