Elisabeth, Grand Duchess of Russia, new martyr
Issue 184 · 1998

This article traces the life and martyrdom of Elisabeth Feodorovna (1864-1918), Grand Duchess of Russia and sister of Tsarina Alexandra, canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in 1981 and then by the Moscow Patriarchate in 1993. Written in the form of a hagiographic meditation by Daniel-Ange on the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of Elisabeth's martyrdom, the article retraces her spiritual journey: her conversion to Orthodoxy, the founding of the Martha and Mary Convent in Moscow — the first Russian community combining monastic life with service to the poor — and her death in a mine shaft at Alapayevsk. The article highlights the ecclesiological originality of this foundation, which revived the ancient order of deaconesses, and advocates for an official recognition of her sainthood by the Catholic Church, in the perspective of the ecumenical dialogue encouraged by John Paul II's encyclical *Orientale lumen*.
