Suzanne de Dietrich and Paul Evdokimov
Issue 172 · 1970

This article is an excerpt from Hans Rudi Weber's work devoted to the figure of Suzanne de Dietrich, a twentieth-century Protestant theologian. It adopts a biographical and spiritual approach to examine the decisive influence exerted by Paul Evdokimov and Russian Orthodox thought on the theological formation of Suzanne de Dietrich. The central idea is that this encounter, forged notably in Menton, profoundly enriched her understanding of liturgy, ecclesial tradition, and the cosmic dimension of redemption. On the theological level, the article highlights how the ecumenical dialogue between Protestantism and Orthodoxy led Suzanne de Dietrich to articulate prophetic vocation and priestly dimension, while discovering a conception of Tradition as a living reality, distinct from both Protestant individualism and Roman Catholic juridicism.
