“Precarity, loneliness, drugs, the undocumented: what are we doing?”
Issue 213 · 2006

This article reports on a round table held as part of an Orthodox gathering, devoted to contemporary forms of precariousness: economic poverty, the situation of asylum seekers, and psychosocial marginalization. Led by Michèle Nikitine, Michel Sollogoub, and Father Nicolas Lacaille, the discussion brings together social analysis and theological foundations. Each speaker addresses a distinct aspect: the evolution of urban and youth poverty, the condition of the refugee as a paradigm of cumulative precariousness, and the particular capacity of ecclesial communities to accompany vulnerable individuals. The theological contribution lies in the biblical and patristic grounding of the reflection — psalms, the gospel of the Last Judgment, Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, Father Cyrille Argenti — which establishes an ecclesiology of active charity, in which the welcoming of one's neighbor and the Eucharistic liturgy constitute two inseparable dimensions of a single sacrament of Christ's presence.
