Rome - Moscow

This article reproduces and comments on an official document of the Synodal Theological Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church, adopted in April 1997, devoted to the state of relations between Rome and Moscow. The approach is that of a documentary translation accompanied by an analytical presentation. The text traces the history of Orthodox-Catholic theological dialogue since the 1960s, identifies the causes of its suspension in 1993 — primarily the question of Uniatism in Ukraine — and analyzes the Balamand document. It notably points out the existence of truncated versions of this document in the Russian Orthodox press, which reversed its meaning. The main contribution lies in the testimony of a moderate official Russian position, distinct from anti-ecumenical currents, which recognizes the validity of Catholic sacraments while calling for ecclesiological clarifications on the notion of "sister Churches."
