Notes on choosing a career

This article by Olivier Clément, originally published in 1959 in a student journal, addresses the question of professional choice from an Eastern Orthodox Christian perspective. It is a theological reflection of a practical nature, proposing criteria for discernment intended to guide the choice of a profession in keeping with the believer's spiritual vocation. The central idea is that professional activity should not merely avoid contradicting Christian convictions, but should constitute a genuine lever for progression toward Christ. On a theological level, the article offers an articulation between active life and spiritual life, while identifying priority areas of engagement for the Christian: the protection of the environment, the development of solidarity on a global scale, and investment in the cultural sphere as a space for evangelization. The prophetic dimension of this analysis, formulated more than sixty years ago, constitutes its principal historical contribution.
