Cet article retrace la fondation, il y a trente ans, du monastère orthodoxe Saint-Silouane dans le Maine, établissement placé sous l'influence spirituelle de l'archimandrite Sophrony Sakharov. L'évêque Syméon (Cossec), fondateur du monastère, livre un témoignage personnel sur les circonstances et les orientations qui ont présidé à cette création. L'idée centrale est que la vie monastique orthodoxe en Occident s'est constituée à partir d'une transmission directe de la tradition hésychaste, héritée de saint Silouane l'Athonite par l'intermédiaire du père Sophrony. L'apport de ce récit est double : il documente l'implantation du monachisme orthodoxe en France au tournant du XXIe siècle et met en lumière le rôle déterminant de la filiation spirituelle dans la transmission vivante de cette tradition au sein d'un contexte occidental contemporain.

This article traces the founding, thirty years ago, of the Saint Silouan Orthodox monastery in Maine, an establishment placed under the spiritual influence of Archimandrite Sophrony Sakharov. Bishop Symeon (Cossec), founder of the monastery, offers a personal account of the circumstances and orientations that presided over its creation. The central idea is that Orthodox monastic life in the West was constituted through a direct transmission of the hesychast tradition, inherited from Saint Silouan the Athonite through Father Sophrony. The contribution of this account is twofold: it documents the establishment of Orthodox monasticism in France at the turn of the twenty-first century and sheds light on the determining role of spiritual filiation in the living transmission of this tradition within a contemporary Western context.

Cet article examine la nature et la finalité de l'obéissance dans la tradition monastique orthodoxe. L'archimandrite Syméon, higoumène du monastère Saint-Silouane, propose une méditation théologique s'inscrivant dans la lignée de l'enseignement du starets Sophrony. L'idée centrale est que l'obéissance monastique constitue une voie de libération intérieure, distincte de toute forme de soumission disciplinaire d'ordre militaire ou civil. En s'appuyant sur la conception sophronyenne de l'obéissance comme « sacrement », l'auteur montre que la relation entre le père spirituel et le moine crée les conditions d'un discernement de la volonté divine, ouvrant ainsi à une participation à la vie trinitaire. L'apport théologique de cet article réside dans l'articulation entre dimension ecclésiale de la direction spirituelle et anthropologie de la liberté, replacée au cœur de la vocation monastique orthodoxe contemporaine.

This article examines the nature and purpose of obedience in the Orthodox monastic tradition. Archimandrite Symeon, hegumen of the Monastery of Saint Silouan, offers a theological meditation in the lineage of the teaching of Starets Sophrony. The central idea is that monastic obedience constitutes a path of inner liberation, distinct from any form of disciplinary submission of a military or civil order. Drawing on the Sophronian conception of obedience as a "sacrament," the author shows that the relationship between the spiritual father and the monk creates the conditions for a discernment of the divine will, thereby opening onto a participation in the Trinitarian life. The theological contribution of this article lies in the articulation between the ecclesial dimension of spiritual direction and an anthropology of freedom, restored to the heart of the contemporary Orthodox monastic vocation.

Cet article examine la relation entre vérité et liberté au sein de l'Église, envisagée à partir d'une perspective christologique. L'higoumène Syméon (Cossec), du monastère Saint-Silouane du Mans, développe une réflexion théologique fondée sur la rencontre personnelle avec le Christ comme condition de la liberté authentique. L'idée centrale est que la vérité n'est pas d'abord un ensemble de propositions doctrinales, mais une réalité personnelle et vivante, identifiée au Christ lui-même, dont la rencontre libère l'être humain de l'emprise du péché. This article examines the relationship between truth and freedom within the Church, approached from a christological perspective. Higoumen Symeon (Cossec), of the Saint-Silouan Monastery in Le Mans, develops a theological reflection grounded in the personal encounter with Christ as the condition of authentic freedom. The central idea is that truth is not primarily a set of doctrinal propositions, but a personal and living reality, identified with Christ himself, whose encounter frees the human being from the grip of sin. The contribution of this study lies in the articulation between christology and spiritual anthropology: Christian freedom is not conceived as individual autonomy, but as participation in the life of Christ within the ecclesial body. This approach offers an Orthodox perspective on a classic tension in Christian theology.
