Saint Éphrem le Syrien

Cet article présente une sélection d'hymnes de saint Éphrem le Syrien, père de l'Église et poète théologien du IVe siècle, consacrées au mystère de l'Incarnation du Verbe. Il s'agit d'une traduction commentée de textes hymnographiques syriaques dans lesquels Éphrem déploie, par le recours systématique à la métaphore et à l'antithèse, la signification théologique de la venue du Christ dans la chair. L'idée centrale est que l'Incarnation constitue un événement paradoxal et inouï, dont les effets s'étendent à l'ensemble de la création. Sur le plan théologique, ces hymnes témoignent d'une christologie poétique propre à la tradition syriaque, distincte des formulations conciliaires grecques contemporaines, et illustrent la manière dont la liturgie et la poésie constituent, dans cette tradition, des vecteurs privilégiés de l'expression dogmatique.

This article presents a selection of hymns by Saint Ephrem the Syrian, a Church Father and theological poet of the fourth century, devoted to the mystery of the Incarnation of the Word. It consists of an annotated translation of Syriac hymnographic texts in which Ephrem unfolds, through the systematic use of metaphor and antithesis, the theological significance of Christ's coming in the flesh. The central idea is that the Incarnation constitutes a paradoxical and unprecedented event, whose effects extend to the whole of creation. On the theological level, these hymns bear witness to a poetic Christology specific to the Syriac tradition, distinct from contemporary Greek conciliar formulations, and illustrate the way in which liturgy and poetry constitute, in this tradition, privileged vehicles of dogmatic expression.
