The author develops a reflection on ecclesial unity and division by mobilizing the metaphor of insularity, which designates the tendency of Christian communities to withdraw into themselves rather than forming a coherent whole. The approach combines scriptural meditation and ecclesiological analysis to examine the capacity of Churches to live out their common belonging to Tradition. The contribution of the article lies in the tension it establishes between the shared heritage of ecclesial Tradition and contemporary dynamics of identity withdrawal, inviting a rethinking of the theological conditions for effective communion between separated communities.

Drawing on theological and ecclesiological study, the text analyzes the conditions under which this council was held, notably the absence of several major autocephalous Orthodox Churches, and questions the criteria by which an episcopal assembly may or may not be qualified as pan-Orthodox. The central argument holds that, despite its limitations and unfinished character, the Crete event nonetheless constitutes a real council whose acts deserve to be recognized. On the theological level, the article proposes that this gathering could inaugurate a renewed conciliar dynamic, capable of fostering intra-Orthodox and ecumenical dialogue over the longer term.

Noël Ruffieux adopts a synthetic historical and theological approach to analyze the gradual shift from the territorial Church to the national Church, a shift of which the diaspora constitutes the most acute indicator. The central idea is that the geographical dispersion of Orthodox Christians outside their countries of origin crystallizes and amplifies the ecclesial disorders generated by phyletism in its multiple forms. The article draws notably on the conclusions of the fourth Pre-Conciliar Pan-Orthodox Conference of 2009, which acknowledged the impossibility of an immediate return to the canonical principle of one bishop per place. The contribution of the study lies in its historical and conciliar contextualization of an ecclesiological question that has remained without a satisfactory institutional resolution within contemporary Orthodoxy.

Adopting a historical and ecclesiological approach, the author traces one hundred and ten years of conciliar gestation, from the encyclicals of Patriarch Joachim III in 1902 to the pre-conciliar conferences of the 2000s, showing how the political upheavals of the twentieth century constantly hindered the project. He then examines the unresolved questions concerning the composition of the Council, its decision-making procedures and the updating of its preparatory documents. The main contribution of the article lies in the articulation between conciliarity and reception: the latter requires the association of the pleroma — bishops, clergy and laity — with the entire process, a response to the contemporary challenges of the Church, and the recognition of a legitimate diversity among local Churches in the reception of conciliar decisions, without the unity of faith being compromised.

Noël Ruffieux, a Swiss Orthodox layman, adopts both an analytical and ecclesiological approach to question the conditions of validity of such a conciliar assembly. The central idea is that the convocation of a pan-Orthodox council cannot be fully legitimate if it excludes the active participation of the people of God as a whole, that is, the ecclesial pleroma, beyond the episcopal body alone. The article thus highlights the responsibility of lay faithful in the conciliar life of the Church: to inform oneself, deliberate and formulate proposals are fully ecclesial acts in their own right. On the theological level, this contribution recalls the Orthodox doctrine of conciliar reception and underlines the risk of a council which, lacking rootedness in the living conscience of the Church, would fall short of its own purpose.
